History
Hawkhirst takes its name from the lane that runs through the middle. In the 1930s it was intended that houses would be built on either side of the road but this was prevented by the Green Belt Act 1937.
Coulsdon and Purley UDC purchased the 35 1/2 acres of land for public open space because it adjoins Kenley Common (which is an open space belonging to the City of London) and is part of the skyline that can be seen from Godstone Road.
Part of the woodland is protected by Tree Preservation Orders.
