Registering a death: step by step

During the Coronavirus pandemic all deaths are registered by telephone. Please do not book an appointment before checking that we have the documentation necessary to register a death.

Losing a loved one can be a very traumatic time. We will ensure that the process of registering the death is as easy as possible and you and your family get the support you need.

Follow the step by step process for registering death in Croydon.

  1. Find out who can arrange the registration of a death if the person died in a house, hospital or somewhere else.

  2. You will need to provide documents in relation to the deceased, the medical certificate of cause of death and funeral details.

  3. You can book an appointment via our online form.

  4. After you register the death, you will need to notify many organisations and departments. You can do this by using the government's Tell us Once service.
