Noise

The council has powers to deal with noise that is considered a statutory nuisance. Find out what to do if you are having problems with loud music and parties, alarms, dogs barking and construction noise.

Alarms

We no longer provide an out of hours service.

Vehicle alarms

If we receive a report of an alarm sounding at a level which is likely to cause a nuisance to local residents, we can serve a legal notice under the Noise and Statutory Nuisances Act 1993 requiring the owner to stop the nuisance.

If we cannot find the owner of the vehicle within an hour, we will ask a security company to disconnect the alarm. In this case the registered keeper of the vehicle must pay the cost of silencing the alarm.

Intruder alarms

If a house alarm sounds for more than 20 minutes we may serve a legal notice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requiring the owner to stop the nuisance.

Should the householder be away and unable to switch off the alarm we can employ a specialist company to disconnect the alarm. If an intruder alarm is internal, we may have to obtain a magistrate's warrant to gain entry before we can disable the alarm.

The householder is responsible for paying for the cost of silencing the alarm.
