The independent visitor application and training process

The application process for independent visitors, including interviews and training courses.

Interview stage

Once we've received your independent visitor application form, we'll ask you to have an interview over video call to assess your experience and suitability for the role.

References and background checks

Following the interview, if we consider that you're suitable for the independent visitor role, we'll send off for references and carry out background checks including a disclosure and barring (DBS) check.

As part of the process we also ask that you complete an occupational health check which may be sent to your GP.

Training

If your references are satisfactory, we'll ask you to asked to attend 5 assessed independent visitor training sessions.

Training sessions are being held over video call due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

Sessions will cover:

  • loss, trauma and attachment theory
  • the asylum process
  • safeguarding
  • working with young people in care
  • listening and participating skills
  • the role, rights and responsibilities of the independent visitor

This training is designed to prepare you for your role as an independent visitor. You will need to attend all the training sessions and to complete written work which forms part of our evaluation process.

These are:

  • Session 1 – 'Introduction to independent visiting and the care system' – 10 November, 5.30pm to 7pm    
  • Session 2 – 'Trauma, attachment and growth' –12 November, 5.30pm to  7.30pm    
  • Session 3 – 'Safeguarding' – 14 November 10.30am to 12.30pm    
  • Session 4 – 'Communications and boundaries' – 17 November, 5.30pm to  7.30pm    
  • Session 5 – 'The role of the independent visitor' – 19 November, 5.30pm to 7.30pm

Panel interview

Once you complete the training to a satisfactory level, the final part of the recruitment process is a panel interview with staff from children's services.

If the panel approves your application to become an independent visitor, we will try to match you with a young person.
